Bryan FD opens physical fitness assessments to the public

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Bryan Fire Department is inviting regular joes to a physical fitness assessment to see if they have what it takes to be a firefighter. Assessments begin this weekend.

In a Facebook post Tuesday morning, the fire department said it will have three practice days when a volunteer can participate in the assessment.

The assessments will be held at Bryan FD’s training tower – 806 North Bryan Street – from 8 to 11 a.m. on August 3, 24, and September 21.

Typically, a physical fitness assessment will involve the following:

  • Carrying a fire hose
  • Pulling a 35-pound equipment bag up a railing
  • Walk 25 yards with a 165-pound rescue mannequin

The Bryan FD said it encourages all applicants interested in a career in firefighting to participate.

According to its website, the Bryan Fire Department does not require any certifications or experience to join the fire department and all training will be available.
