Business at center of county-wide debate receiving threatening phone calls, owner says

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT)—The Winchester-Clark County Tourism Commission says it received backlash after including an event hosted by The Crystal Coven in its monthly newsletter. During a special meeting, the commission said it received emails questioning its decision to promote the shop.

During the meeting, there was a larger-than-normal public turnout. Some members of the public spoke about why they believe The Crystal Coven to be a business “selling witchcraft materials.” Others spoke in defense of the shop and its owner, Shannon Tipton.

Since April’s meeting, Tipton says she’s had people approach her saying some not-so-nice things.

“There’s a store just down the street, and I went in, and I was stopped. Not some nice things were said. I’ve had folks come into the shop. Not saying very nice things,” said Tipton.

Tipton’s attorney says she’s received threatening phone calls, one even threatening to burn the shop to the ground.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a period of time to where I’ve been afraid to answer the phone, or I’m afraid when someone comes in,” said Tipton.

She reiterates what she said during the Tourism Commission’s meeting. “I’m a metaphysical shop. I sell stones, crystals, jewelry, we sell herbs, apparel, incense, journals, we sell all kinds of things,” said Tipton.

Despite their not-so-kind words, Tipton says she’s still trying to love those who stand against her.

“On the other side of this, I hope that people understand that we don’t have to all agree. We don’t have to live a specific way. No matter what people believe or how they believe that I live, that at the end of the day, we’re all human beings. We are part of the community. And we need to live and move day to day in some type of harmony, and that the hatred and bigotry stop,” said Tipton.

Through it all, Tipton says her customers are what have kept her going.

“For those who have come in sharing love, show, and support. It’s greatly appreciated,” said Tipton.

Tipton says she isn’t going to let the noise stop her, and she has no plans of leaving. She renewed her business license just last week.
