Business booms on Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – A new shop is breathing new life into a historic Broadway theater in downtown Cape Girardeau.

It’s part of a revitalization that’s been years in the making.

That’s just one of several new businesses popping up downtown. From restaurants to boutiques to candy stores, new businesses are booming on Broadway.

Some of the new owners say they want to capitalize on the growth.

“I’ve always loved clothes and fashion from a very young age,” said Kiersten Vincent.

Kiersten Vincent turned that love for fashion into a business that she recently moved into the old Esquire Theater building, that’s sat empty on Broadway for decades.

“I started in the indie house. We were there for a couple of years and then we just moved here,” said Vincent.

Vincent said when it came time to expand her women’s clothing boutique “Pluck,” she knew she wanted to be on Broadway.

“Just kind of had that feeling like this is going to be perfect and especially, I think being the front of downtown was definitely something that we were looking into and interested in as well, and being close to the university,” said Vincent.

Just across the street, there’s a new spot for a sweet treat.

“This whole thing started because I started making homemade marshmallows,” said Marla Moore.

Hence the name of Marla Moore’s new candy shop, Smoore’s Artesian Confections.

Moore opened her doors less than two weeks ago.

“There’s an awesome downtown vibe It’s kind of a great location,” said Moore.

That is just one reason why another new business will open on Broadway in November.

Madison Snyder is working to open a franchise of Grateful Headz dispensary in Cape Girardeau.

“Every weekend I go to Broadway and I just, I’m putting in work in my own shop,” said Snyder.

“I felt like it was the perfect place to really reach out to maybe a younger crowd.”

As more shops look to open along Broadway, all the owners said they’re looking forward to their futures.

“I’m so excited to bring this brand and this store to Cape,” said Snyder.

“I think I’ve settled into this role and I’m excited to grow,” added Vincent.

Leaders with the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce say the boom in new business is encouraging to see.
