Business expanding in Cedar Rapids to address food desert

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A business in Cedar Rapids will expand and help address the needs of a neighborhood after a grocery store closer earlier this year.

Hornbill Asian Market will lease the building at 1445 1st Avenue Southeast. The company was founded in Waterloo. A press release says it’s “known for its extensive selection of fresh produce, Asian groceries, and specialty foods.”

“The store’s arrival is expected to complement temporary food access programs implemented by the city and local nonprofits, such as mobile food pantries and free delivery services,” the release goes on to say.

Skogman Commercial helped to secure the lease for the property by representing Hornbill.

The facility was built in 2019 and includes more than 11,000 square feet.

The food desert came about for that area of Cedar Rapids when Hy-Vee closed it’s location on 1st Avenue in May 2024.
