Business Mentoring Program sponsored by city of Gainesville to be held Thursday

Connecting up-and-coming entrepreneurs with established and accomplished local businesspeople will highlight an event on Thursday at the GRU Administration Building.

The Business Mentoring Program Kickoff will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at 301 SE Fourth Ave. in Gainesville. To register, visit tinyurl.com/yhkjnny8.

The program was launched in 2014, but took a pause during the pandemic and was revamped in 2022, said Sylvia Warren, equal opportunity manager for the city of Gainesville, in an email to The Sun.

“The program has experienced significant growth over the years,” Warren said. “In fiscal 2024, we welcomed the largest business cohort since the program’s inception. Additionally, we have introduced public recognition by the City Commission and established a formal awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the participants.”

The kick-off program will feature mentors providing comprehensive training to protégé businesses, focusing on specific areas where they need to grow and develop, Warren said.

“The training will be tailored to address the unique needs of each business, helping them enhance their operations and achieve their growth objectives,” Warren said.

West Family Construction has benefited from the program by being mentored by Oelrich Construction.

“I was able to obtain the knowledge and skills to build a solid foundation for future business ventures,” said Tasha West, owner of West Family Construction, which specializes in residential and commercial construction. “I was also able to network and build relationships with business owners that are like-minded.”

The mentorship by Oelrich Construction has helped her grow her business, West said, adding that the staff with the city who oversee the program care about those involved in the program.

“They care about the business aspect of the program, but they also care personally about the people in the program,” West said. “I would definitely recommend this program, especially for businesses just starting out.”
