Business owner near Orange Co. shooting scene leans on faith for support

ORANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WAVE) – Police in Orange County are still searching for the suspect involved in shooting Deputy Zach Andry.

The shooting happened shortly after midnight Friday near Taco’s Treasures Thrift Shop. Becky Froman owns the store. She says Friday was anything, but normal.

“On the way here, I heard sirens behind me, so I pulled over,” she explained. “I saw the Indiana State Police and Perry Indiana Swat teams go through. And I am thinking, ‘What in the world is going on?’”

Police were looking for 33-year-old Austin Schepers. Shortly after midnight on Friday, Orange County Deputy Zach Andry saw Schepers car stopped on State Road 56. Police say Andry checked on Schepers and asked him to get out of the vehicle.

That’s when Schepers shot the deputy. Andry was taken to UofL Hospital, where officials say he has a long recovery ahead.

This situation unfolded in front of Froman’s business.

“It happened right across the highway, it can’t get much closer than that,” Froman said.

Schepers left the area after the shooting and police found his car abandoned near Orangeville. On Friday, they concentrated their search in a wooded area and aggressively pursued any tips about his whereabouts. New Albany police raided a home they believed Schepers was at, but he wasn’t there.

Froman says she’s handled the news about Deputy Zach Andry and Schephers by leaning on her faith.

“I believe in the higher power of God and when I pray a hedge of protection around here, nothing is going to happen,” Froman said.

Behind Froman is a prayer wall full of requests and answered prayers. It’s been a part of her business practice since Taco’s Treasures opened years ago. Before learning Officer Andry’s name, Froman had already added him to her wall.

“That’s a daily thing for us,” Froman explained. “Each day before the store is open, that board is prayed for. If I have customers waiting for me, they will have to just look at stuff while I take care of my board.”

Froman says she plans to add a donation jug to help Deputy Andry’s family. In the meantime, Andry’s card will remain on her prayer board.

“We have everyone from police officers to news reporters to common people,” Froman said. “We are all alike in God’s eyes. Doesn’t matter who we are.”
