Business reacts to bridge closure

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) – A bridge connecting two cities, and two states, is set to close Monday and remain closed for 30 days of construction.

The bridge connects Russell, Kentucky and Ironton, Ohio. The upcoming road closure is causing concern for local businesses.

Kelly Queen owns Queens Formals and Bridal in Russell. It’s family owned and only opened two years ago. With the business being new, she’s worried the closure might make people across the river think twice on where to buy dresses and suits.

“We get a lot of Ironton business… We are really growing that way and I am concerned about the bridge being closed for 30 days,” Queen said.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said the project is going to be a preventative one to restore a nearly 8-year-old driving surface.

They said because of the narrow width of the bridge, a partial closure wasn’t feasible, and completing the entire project at one time is the best option.

Queen said this time of year is when students start looking at clothes for winter formal and has a message for those getting ready for their big day.

“I would just love for them to take the time, if they can take the extra 5 or 10 minutes that would be out of their way and just come and see us,” Queen said.

The Ashland bridges will be serving as a detour and drivers should expect extra traffic and delays.
