EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Traveling can be a great time when the 4th of July rolls around, there’s so much to do in just a few days. Fireworks, cook outs and spending time with loved ones.

However, to ensure safety when traveling for the holiday, there are some things to look out for.

Officer Al Christian, with the Wisconsin State Patrol, says to check to make sure your car is running right.

“If you’re gonna be traveling, especially a long distance, you want to make sure your vehicles in good working order the last thing you want is to be broke down, on the side of the road,” he says.

Christian also mentions a risk of road buckling, when the pavement increases due to severe heat exposure and can cause vehicle damage.

The next potential roadblock is construction.

“With the busier travel days, expect to have delays in traffic, there’s gonna be construction work over the weekend which means reduced speed limits, which is gonna cause traffic backup. So always be prepared for any kind of change in road conditions,” Christian said.

With a traffic back up, it is always recommended to begin your travels early.

During your travels though, be cautious of potentially impaired drivers.

Christian says, “If you’re not gonna be sober, then you need to have a sober driver… and we have other options there’s ubers, there’s taxis.”
