Let the Games Begin

 

Conference play is right around the corner with Friday marking the start of CAA action. Last year’s regular-season champ Stony Brook travels to Northeastern for the early afternoon tip-off, the reigning champions Drexel host Delaware at 6 p.m. Charleston, Monmouth, UNCW, and William & Mary host Towson, Hofstra, Campbell, and Hampton respectively at 7 p.m. The preseason favorites N.C. A&T welcome Elon to Greensboro for another 7 p.m. tip-off to close out the evening.

 

Sunday sees all 14 teams retake the floor, with seven contests commencing from 1-2 p.m. Elon takes on Wiliam & Mary, and Towson travels to UNCW for the 1 p.m. contests. Hampton, Charleston, Delaware, Drexel, and Monmouth welcome N.C. A&T, Campbell, Hofstra, Northeastern, and Stony Brook to their respective arenas at 2 p.m.

Fantastic Freshman

Eight weeks into the season two freshmen have taken the conference by storm, tallying three CAA Rookie of the Week awards each. Elon’s Jayda Angel was the first to complete the feat and has been dominant for the Phoenix all season. Angel averages 9.7 ppg, and 3.9 rpg on 33.3% shooting from the field. The guard had a career-high 20 points against Virginia Tech. Towson’s Khady Leye has been lights out for the Tigers this year, sitting third on the team with 10.8 ppg alongside a team-high 7.5 rebounds. The Senegal native has eight games this season with at least five points and five assists.

 

TEAM NOTES

 

Campbell

Senior forward Courtney Dahlquist leads the Camels with 21 threes and is shooting a CAA-best 36.2% from beyond the arc.

 

Charleston

Taryn Barbot leads the Cougars in scoring with 16.0 ppg, which is also good for third in the conference. 

 

Delaware

Four Blue Hens are shooting 40% or better from the field on 20+ shots: Michelle Ojo (45.8%), Ande’a Cherisier (41.7%), Rebecca Demeke (40.5%), and Chloe Wilson (40.5%).

 

Drexel

Drexel tied a program record, holding Lebanon Valley to just 30 points, which is the fewest points allowed to an opponent since Drexel held Hofstra to 30 points on January 6, 2008.

Elon

Raven Preston sits second in the conference and first on the team with 9.3 rebounds per game.

Hampton

Jenae Dublin carries a 9.3 scoring average with 6.0 rebounds per game.

 

Hofstra

Hofstra went until 2:24 of the fourth quarter without allowing a free throw attempt by Iona.

 

Monmouth

The Hawks average a league-best 4.55 blocks through their first 11 games.

N.C. A&T

A&T is allowing just 34.9 rebounds per game, good for second lowest in the conference.

 

UNCW

Evan Miller scored 15 points and reached 100 career three-pointers against Longwood.

Northeastern

Abby Jegede leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 ppg.

Stony Brook

Breauna Ware is shooting an impressive 40.7% on 27 shots from behind the arc.

Towson

Anasia Staton led the Tigers with a career-high 19 points in her first game of the season against Columbia.

William & Mary

From Nov. 29 until Jan. 3 the Tribe will not play a game at home. The 35 straight days without a home game is the fifth-longest stretch in DI.
