Cannabis enthusiasts celebrate World Weed Day as police crackdown on DUIs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – While many celebrate World Weed Day on April 20, many law enforcement agencies are now focused on cracking down on driving while high.

As cannabis enthusiasts celebrate World Weed Day on Saturday, April 20, little remains known about its official origins. However, many have their theories and legends.

While its origins are unknown, the 4/20 celebration can be dated back to the 1970s. On this date each year cannabis enthusiasts worldwide celebrate their love for the plant and its benefits – often at events like festivals or parties.

The National Institutes of Health has reported on the therapeutic value of THC – the active chemical found in cannabis. Those include relief for those who have been diagnosed with AIDS, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and Anxiety.

However, local and state agencies have warned those who partake in the day’s celebration to not drive while under the influence of marijuana.

The Kansas Department of Transportation noted that 59 people died in crashes that involved drugs in 2023.
