Car crashes into local business, 19-year-old driver accused of driving drunk

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – A 19-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly crashing into a local business while driving drunk, according to police.

Officers said that when they arrived in the area, they found that a white Nissan Maxima had crashed into Creative Avenues, a local business. In a photo provided by police, the car can be seen hanging partially out of the remains of a window with a fire hydrant knocked on its side among debris from the surrounding brickwork.

The Grand Junction Police Department said that the business suffered “significant damage” from the crash.

Police said that the alleged driver of the car, 19-year-old Adrian Lopez, fled the scene before they arrived, adding to his list of charges. Sometime after the crash, officers said that they found Lopez in a nearby apartment complex and was arrested.

One passenger reportedly sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The passenger was the only one reportedly injured as the business was unoccupied.

Among his other charges, the police department said that it has determined alcohol was a factor that lead to the crash.

The complete list of charges Lopez is facing are:

  • Failed to remain on scene at an accident involving injuries.
  • Left the scene after striking property
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence
  • Obstructing a police officer
  • Resisting arrest
  • Open container in a vehicle
  • First degree criminal trespass
  • Minor in possession

Lopez is being held in the Mesa County Jail as of 9:30 Thursday morning. His bail has not be set, pending arraignment.
