Carlos Alcaraz provides fitness update ahead of the Paris Masters after change from last year

Carlos Alcaraz may be just 21 years old, but already expectation for him to challenge for every honour is high.

After all, he has set the standards at such a level that everybody knows what he is capable of.

Already a four-time Grand Slam champion at his tender age, it’s remarkable the trajectory he is on.

With the Paris Masters now underway, he now has a chance to add a new trophy to his cabinet, should fitness not be a problem.

Carlos Alcaraz assesses his Paris Masters chances

Speaking to the press ahead of his return to the Paris Masters, he previewed the event where historically he has not performed well.

Seeking to attribute that to end-of-year burnout, Carlos Alcaraz has now provided a fitness update, noting: ‘Well, yeah. I haven’t played good tennis here in this tournament. Probably at the end of the year, I have been tired, or yeah, as I said last year, I had to understand that the season is still going after September.

‘And I think I did prepare really well this year. So I don’t know, you know. The calendar is super tight, super demanding, as well. So coming to the last tournament of the year, probably I have been tired the last year, didn’t play as well as I wanted, but coming to this year, I think I’m feeling different.

‘I know what I have to do. I have been doing great work lately. So I think I think I’m ready to do good results or at least go farther than last year, that I think is not really difficult.’

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner no longer set to battle for another title

With the news that Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the Paris Masters, the field has been blown wide open.

After all, the Serbian would have been vying for his record-extending eighth title at this event, as the greatest champion in its history.

Instead, we are likely due a new winner, with neither Alcaraz nor Jannik Sinner having taken the title here before.

However, the latter has seen his chances stripped too, with Sinner pulling out of the Paris Masters through illness.

Given what we have witnessed all season, especially in recent months, it was expected that these two would be the frontrunners to triumph in Paris.

But now, that cannot be the case.

Sinner snapped a three-match losing streak to the Spaniard in their unofficial Six Kings Slam match earlier this month, but Alcaraz had beaten him at Indian Wells, Roland Garros and Beijing this year, winning the title each time.

The number two in the world, now set to be the number one seed, will see this as a golden chance to claim the title.
