Carnival Cruise Line is reminding passengers that engaging in games of chance for money is prohibited everywhere aboard its vessels except the designated casino.
John Heald, Carnival’s brand ambassador, recently responded to a guest inquiry about whether Carnival would set aside a private room where passengers could play a popular dice game called Left, Center, Right (LCR). The forthcoming passenger is booked to sail on Carnival Radiance for a 14-night voyage that departs Feb. 9 from Long Beach, CA.
LCR is the most popular game after poker for Americans aged 50 plus. You answered [another guest] saying Carnival would not allow this to be played and enjoyed. I played LCR on another cruise line with 10-12 people for money [and was] provided a private room. Where is the actual harm in this?” the guest pondered, as first reported by Cruise Hive, a blog dedicated to Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruises.
Heald, who has been with Carnival for 35 years, said LCR can be played among passengers, but if real money is involved, it’s banned. He says Carnival must abide by all laws and gaming statutes for international waters, which allow for casino gambling only in designated, regulated areas.
Gaming Must Be In Casino
Heald explained that any game involving cash is prohibited aboard Carnival Cruise Line voyages.
“We do not allow gambling outside of the casino in any way, shape, or form. There are very strict rules about this. You can play LCR for fun or Twix bars but not money,” Heald said.
LCR is a simple dice game with an outcome based purely on chance and luck. Players roll up to three dice. They move their chips to the person to their immediate right or left or to the center pot based on how the dice come up. Dice that don’t have an L, C, or R means the player retains their chips. The last player standing holding chips wins the pot.
As Casino.org reported last May, Carnival in 2024 converted many “Jazz on 4” lounges into smoke-free casino rooms. The gaming spaces are in addition to each ship’s primary casino where tobacco use is permitted.
The following Carnival ships offer smoke-free casinos — Jubilee, Celebration, Mardi Gras, Firenze, Venezia, Vista, Dream, Magic, and Breeze.
Carnival Top Casino Cruise Line
In November, Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Celebration was named the Best Cruise Ship Casino by Newsweek’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards. Carnival’s Mardi Gras ranked third behind Norwegian Escape.
The Celebration casino has nearly 200 slot machines and a half-dozen table games offering blackjack, craps, roulette, and Carnival’s own Fun 21. The minimum age to gamble on a Carnival cruise is 18 years old.
Along with the latest slot machines and table games, Carnival casinos offer a Players Club that allows rewards members to earn discounted or free cruises, access to exclusive events, and complimentary alcoholic drinks while gambling.
