Carolina Herrera’s New Denim Collab with Frame Is Here and It’s Delightfully Fresh

For the first time, Carolina Herrera and Frame are joining forces, bringing shoppers a fresh new palette of jeans in a one-of-a-kind capsule. As with many origin stories, this one began among friends sharing a late evening. Erik Torstensson, Frame’s creative director, and his longtime partner, Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massanet, were over at Wes Gordon’s home, and Massanet was wearing a Carolina Herrera top. “It was a big kind of dramatic top,” recalls Gordon, the creative director of Carolina Herrera. “She was wishing she had the perfect pair of jeans to wear with it.” Something instantly clicked. “And so Eric and I kind of looked at each other and we’re like, Let’s do it.”

Bolstered by the long-term friendship between the two creative directors, the partnership felt organic and natural but creatively invigorating. “The whole idea of doing collaborations is to extend outside of your comfort zone,” says Torstensson. “I can do Frame all day long and I know our DNA and whatnot, but I think you should say yes to these things when there’s mutual excitement.”

For Gordon, it created a challenging premise. “It was really about turning things upside down. What is evening, what is day, what is dressy, and what is casual?”

The collection features five key silhouettes ranging from tapered jeans and tailored denim jackets to more whimsical pieces that bring forth the Herrera DNA, like a fantastic long denim ball skirt and a corset skirt. Pricing begins at $498 for the corset skirts and goes up to $1,198 for the ball skirt, which is really the hero piece of the collection.

The denim capsule will be exhibited during Carolina Herrera’s Resort 2024 show, which takes place later today in Mexico City. “It blended itself really naturally into the collection when we were doing styling,” shares Gordon. “We have some looks that are head to toe Herrera and Frame, and then we have others where separates are mixed with Herrera pieces. But it felt really natural. It didn’t feel forced. And I think that was kind of the hope all along.”

This isn’t just the first time Frame has collaborated with Herrera; it’s the first time it has collaborated with any major fashion house. While it might seem like an unexpected partnership, the brands are actually quite complementary. “What I always try to do at Herrera is take the idea of getting dressed up and removing the rigidity and formality from it. Getting dressed up doesn’t just have to be a special occasion. An injection of denim and denim separates—combining something from our atelier that was hand-draped in a beautiful silk organza with denim—is a really fun way to do that,” Gordon shares.

Perhaps the most refreshing and unusual thing about the collection is the use of Herrera’s signature colors, like marigold or bright Herrera red. Torstensson say it’s all about “the totality of the pop colors” in the collection. “Because without that, it’s just a high-waisted jean or a denim jacket. But I think the idea of bringing in pop color and optimism, and happiness feels right for now, when everything feels so uncertain in a way,” says the Frame creative director.

This desire for optimism is shared. Asked to describe the Herrera woman, Gordon says, “She’s a woman who’s fabulous. She loves getting dressed; getting dressed for her is a source of self-expression and joy. And I think she’s an optimist. She loves color. We all know there’s a lot we can’t control in the world. There’s a lot that’s scary and the antidote to that isn’t more darkness, but trying to bring about joy wherever we can.”
