Carrie Bradshaw’s Funeral Fashion Is A Lesson In Upstaging The Deceased

RIP Samantha Jones, who is not dead, but will never be returning to the And Just Like That… franchise. Though an “insider source” earlier this month informed Life & Style that the power publicist would be featuring in each and every episode of this awful, brilliant series’s third season, Kim Cattrall emphatically denied that she would be making any further cameos. “Aw that’s so kind, but I’m not.”

And so when images of Sarah-Jessica Parker and co – filming what looked like a funeral scene – surfaced online yesterday afternoon, fans began to speculate about Samantha’s true fate. I wouldn’t have put it past Cattrall – who does not want to be in a situation where she is not enjoying herself for even an hour, which includes being on the end of a telephone line some 3,461 miles from Manhattan – to have included a death clause in her contract when she reprised her role for all of 75 seconds last season. “When the alleged Samantha return is a single shot of her in an open casket with a killer mug,” as one Twitter user imagined. That would surely bring the will-she-won’t-she rumour mill to a definitive halt.

And yet here’s the thing: Carrie Bradshaw would not be giggling at the funeral of such a beloved, albeit estranged, friend. She is not sick… even if that caped Brandon Maxwell jumpsuit and Camellia headpiece reads as a tacit attempt to upstage the deceased themselves. Who, then, is Bradshaw so thrilled to bid farewell to? The hilarious Che Diaz, who once left her in a puddle of her own urine after undergoing a hip replacement? The inoffensive Nya Wallace? Or perhaps the gang came together to collectively mourn the three inches of fabric visibly absent from the bottom of Aidan’s trousers. This franchise has, of course, already suffered a series of tragic casualties.
