Casino Reclaims Wing Championship of the World
The Village Casino held its annual WingFest on Saturday and Sunday starting at 5 p.m. and concluding Sunday at 5 p.m. with the championship title lineage figuratively secured around the owners’ proverbial waists.
“We sold 55,760 wings,” said Andrew Carlson, Village Casino owner and operator. “We did it.”
The Casino,1 Lakeside Dr., sold 42,520 wings in 2018, securing its position as the world’s 24-hour chicken wing sales champion. However, according to an msn.com post, that record was shattered by Weitzel’s Wings of Laramie, Wyo., which sold 48,083 wings in 24 hours.
Bemus Point’s Wingfest was attended by several thousand people who bought wings, ate ice cream and enjoyed the event’s festive atmosphere.
“We’re from Maryland,” said Abigail Langford, of Easton, Md. “We’re up here vacationing and heard about the Casino going for a wing title, and, well, we’re doing our part to help out.”
Bemus Point Mayor Jeff Molnar stated that he believed that an hour into WingFest, that there were around 2,000 to 3,000 people in and around the Village Casino. Area residents’ Facebook feeds were flooded with Wingfest photos and messages of support for the Casino’s effort to reclaim its wing sales record.
In another point of view, Leslie Capitella of Oceanside, Calif., stated “I’m eating ice cream, I don’t support the wholesale slaughter of chickens,” she said.
In response to Capitella’s statement, an event attendee, who did not give his name, eating a smattering of chicken wings, who overheard her, and whose mouth was covered in sauce, replied “I do. The little chickens have found a good use in my belly.”
