Celebrity fitness guru’s death deemed accidental
LOS ANGELES – The brother of Richard Simmons has confirmed that the death of the celebrity fitness guru in July has been deemed accidental.
In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, Simmons family spokesman Tom Estey said that Lenny Simmons, Richard’s brother, received “a call from the LA Coroner’s Office. The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The Family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”
Simmons, a celebrity icon from the ‘80s, was found on July 13 by his longtime housekeeper, one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. Los Angeles Police Department had said “there is no foul play,” but the cause of his death was originally deferred as additional testing was needed.
Initial reports said that Simmons fell in his home on July 12, after feeling dizzy. His housekeeper had said the exercise icon planned to see a doctor the next day if he still felt ill.
“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother,” Lenny said in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter at the time of Simmons’ death. “I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He truly cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer help. So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life.”
