Charleston International Airport providing tips for easy holiday travel

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – With the holiday season in full swing, officials at the Charleston International Airport are advising travelers of some tips to make sure their trips for Thanksgiving and beyond go as smoothly as possible.

“Thanksgiving is the kickoff to the holiday travel season. With record-breaking numbers year after year, we expect to be busy this year as well,” Elliot Summey, the executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, said. “With just a bit of advance planning you can focus on enjoying the holiday with your loved ones.”

Those taking to the skies in the coming week should do the following:

  • Arrive early. Passengers should try to get to the airport at least two hours before their flight’s departure time.
  • Plan for parking. Spaces are going to fill up quickly and parking will have premium pricing, so those who need to park should give themselves extra time for remote parking and shuttle service to the terminal. That shuttle service from remote and seasonal parking is complimentary and runs 24 hours a day.
  • Follow signage. There will likely be additional signs to mark parking lot entrances, remote lots and overflow parking. Given the construction happening at the airport, there is an ever-present possibility of temporary detours and traffic pattern shifts.
  • Traveling domestic? Use “CHS Check ‘N Go.” The free curbside baggage check-in service for domestic travel has two stations at the terminal front curb and there is a remote check-in station on the second level of the daily parking garage. Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit and United Airlines allow curbside check-in.
  • Be mindful of packing carry-ons. Use the Transportation Security Administration website to find out what is and is not allowed in carry-on bags and how TSA manages different items. Doing this ensures the fastest path through airport security. Be prepared to remove electronics, liquids, powders and food for separate screening,
  • Check flight status ahead of time. Do this through the individual airline or on the airport’s website.
