Charleston man arrested for intent to commit sexual assault at West Ashley Planet Fitness

A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection to a sexual assault at a fitness center in West Ashley, according to Charleston Police spokesperson Sgt. Chris Stinson.

Richard Isiah Whitney, of Charleston, is charged with assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, online jail records show.

The incident occurred at West Ashley Planet Fitness located on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Stinson said.

Whitney is accused of following a gym member into a private area of the facility, grabbing them, and attempting to sexually assault them on Wednesday, July 24 at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Stinson said the victim was able to flee to safety.

Whitney was taken into custody Saturday, July 27, jail records show. He was released on a $5,000 bond the next day.
