The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has been recognized as one of the best zoos around the globe by a leading travel publication.

Travel + Leisure magazine included the Cincinnati Zoo, aka the home of Fiona the hippo, on its 25 of the Best Zoos in the World list, updated Jan. 1. Not organized by rank, the list also included Melbourne Zoo in Australia and Basel Zoo in Switzerland, among others.

According to the report, the Cincinnati Zoo, which began as the Zoological Society of Cincinnati in 1873 before officially opening to the public in 1875, is the second-oldest zoo in the U.S. It has over 400 animal species, ranging from blue death-feigning beetles to black rhinos.

The zoo also offers behind-the-scenes experiences with elephants, kangaroos, hippos, lions, manatees, penguins and other animals. But additional purchases may be required.

The Cincinnati Zoo was the only zoo in Ohio included on the list. It’s also one of only 12 zoos in the country featured in the report.

Travel + Leisure editors curated the list, which features zoos that “offer educational programs, invest in research projects to help endangered animals, or have release programs to help get animals back into the wild,” per the report.
