City council approves expansion for Huntsville Ice Sports Center
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Huntsville’s City Council and the Sports Commission are taking steps to expand ice sports for everyone.
Last week, the city council approved a $1.6 million expansion for the Huntsville Ice Sports Center.
The expansion means more parking, a new and improved arena, and dedicated space for the sport of curling.
Executive Director of the Huntsville Sports Commission Mark Russell said this expansion will provide more room for larger sporting events, and can support the Huntsville Havoc for future tournaments.
He said they have plans to host curling competitions and even figure skating in the future.
Overall, Russell says these improvements will have a big impact.
“An ice plex expansion is really important to us,” he said. “It will bring great economic impact to the city, we’ll be able to host bigger and better tournaments. And also it will serve our citizens. There are so many people over there that want to skate right now. Now, they’ll have more ice time and it will be a better time for them to skate.”
Russell said adding more to the ice plex was a great decision for the city of huntsville as ice-related sports like hockey and figure skating are rising in popularity.
