NORTHPORT, Ala. (WBRC) – With the sports complex project underway in Northport, city leaders approved plans this week for some amenities around the park near the Black Warrior River.

Monday, the city council approved $840,000 to a firm to develop plans for a hotel and indoor sports facility near Kentuck Park. This will be near a much larger project at River Run park that will include several baseball and softball fields. City leaders broke ground on the sports complex earlier this year.

There’s a lot of competitive sports taking place in and around Northport. Parents and city leaders say these projects are much needed and will have a huge economic impact for the city.

“This sports complex is going to bring a lot of people to Northport. Instead of going out of town for tournaments, it will be more tournaments coming to Northport and the kids who play baseball will have opportunities to be able to play baseball at home in major tournaments,” Councilor Pro Tem Woodrow Washington who represents District 2 said.

Washington hopes sometime next year, the ball fields and other facilities will be open for business. He says the new developments will help transform this part of the city for generations to come.
