Clark County marks World Day of Remembrance with multi-event Rally to Remember

Traffic crashes are a daily occurrence in Southern Nevada, impacting countless lives.

To honor those affected, Clark County participated in the World Day of Remembrance on Sunday.

It’s an initiative started by the World Health Organization in 2005 and embraced locally since 2017.

This year, the event usually takes place on the third Sunday of November, avoiding the usual conflict with Thanksgiving travel.

The community was invited to the “Rally to Remember,” which featured over 35 potential stops for prize opportunities for cyclists and motorcyclists, a timed 5K run with awards in various age categories, and a one-mile fun walk. A car show displayed vehicles ranging from the earliest models to the latest AI offerings from partner Vay.

Erin Breen is the Director of the Road Equity Alliance at UNLV.

Breen says, ” We have participated in the World Day of Remembrance which was established by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is always the 3rd Sunday in November. In America, it is the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Because it was not this year, we decided to do a Rally to Remember and there was a run, a bicycle race, a motorcycle rally, and a car show.”

For children’s safety, Breen also discussed extending school zones to a quarter of a mile around every school.

For victims still struggling, a sound healing session was presented by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Attendees were able to visit booths from various partners to earn raffle tickets or speak with elected officials about current and future road projects.

The event included a ride of silence at 3:15 p.m. to honor lives lost, followed by a Candlelight Memorial for Road Crash Victims.

The World Day of Remembrance also serves to honor the men and women who respond to every crash, including police, fire, ambulance crews, fatal detectives, react teams, tow truck drivers, and the coroner and CSI teams.

This year, the event started with Emergency Responder Week, which runs through November 24.
