Clinical Jagger Eaton on top in men’s street semi-final, world champ Shirai Sora exits – results
Dual-threat Jagger Eaton continued his impressive run of form by qualifying in first for the men’s street skateboarding final at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China on Saturday (18 May).
The 23-year-old U.S. star was the consummate professional putting down a 91.24 run before scoring a 93.49 and 92.43 in his first two trick attempts. His combined score of 277.16 shot him up to the top of the order and there Eaton remained even as the rest of the pack continued their chase.
Qualifying in second and third were Portugal’s Gustavo Ribeiro and Eaton’s team-mate Nyjah Huston, popular amongst the packed out stands watching the very best skaters at work.
In all, three U.S. skaters made the cut with Chris Joslin doing enough in the first heat to secure his place in fourth. They were matched only in number by Japan who saw Onodera Ginwoo, Sasaki Toa and top qualifier from the prelims, Netsuke Kairi.
One notable Japanese name that failed to qualify was world champion Shirai Sora. The number one-ranked skater only put down one trick in five attempts limiting his score and forcing him into an early exit.
Shirai’s early departure is the second big Japanese name to fall at OQS with Olympic champion Horigome Yuto out after the prelims.
The final of the men’s street contest will take place on Sunday along with the women’s street final and park finals.
