Close harmony: Ladies’ a cappella group the Platinum Show Chorus celebrate 50 years

“Small but mighty” Platinum Show Chorus, part of Sweet Adelines International, celebrate 50 years with a special concert on Nov. 16.

The ladies of the Platinum Show Chorus have been singing for a long time, as in 50 years. The a capella group, a member of Sweet Adelines International, nail four-part harmony each and every song.

They will be at their singing best when they celebrate the half century of their organization with a special concert at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at Heritage Isle, 6800 Legacy Blvd., Viera.

“The main focus of our musical style is ringing the chords in four parts so overtones can be heard by the listener when they are not even sung,” said marketing chair Teresa Zimmerman.

The chorus draws from a fiercely devoted member base such as Nancy Henderson, who in 1983 relocated from New England to Brevard County in part because there was a chapter of the Sweet Adelines.

“I love four-part acapella music, all my best friends are there, and I think it keeps my lungs working well,” Henderson said. “I think the audiences love our style of music.”

Henderson is not alone in her allegiance to the chorus. Umbrella organization Sweet Adelines International counts more than 16,000 members in 10 countries.

The local chapter, which comprises 20-plus members ranging in age from Generation Z to well into their 80s, holds its own in competitions and has bested much larger chapters in competitions around Florida. The group has sung the national anthem at Washington Nationals spring training games, celebrated vets during Honor Flight family reunions and sang at The Avenue Viera, Melbourne Square, senior communities and even at the Disney resort in Vero Beach.

The Platinum Show Chorus meets from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays, except during the summer doldrums, at their clubhouse at 2727 N. Wickham Rd., Melbourne. The ladies welcome visitors to rehearsals and love new members. While no singing experience is required, willingness to learn is.

“It’s a stress reliever,” said Zimmerman, who, like Henderson, belonged to another Sweet Adelines chapter before she moved to Brevard and joined the Platinum Show Chorus.

“This small but mighty chorus has stood the test of time for 50 years and continues to thrive today.”
