In the world of NFL fandom, the title of “America’s Team” has long been synonymous with the Dallas Cowboys. Known for their decades of dominance, iconic players and unmatched fan base, the Cowboys have held this moniker for years.

But as the NFL landscape evolves, the question is being raised: Is it time for a new team to take over the crown?

Right now, there’s only one team stealing the spotlight from the Dallas Cowboys these days, and it’s the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here’s why CNN sports Don Riddler says the Kansas City Chiefs are staking their claim as “America’s Team” over the Cowboys.

Should Dallas Cowboys or Kansas City Chiefs be America’s Team?

As the debate intensifies over which NFL team truly deserves the title of “America’s Team,” the Kansas City Chiefs—powered by quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ brilliance on the field and tight-end Travis Kelce’s growing pop culture stardom off it—have increasingly been seen as a worthy contender.

While the Cowboys have long held the title, the Chiefs’ recent successes and cultural crossover have prompted many, including CNN sports anchor Don Riddler, to argue that it’s time for a change.

“Why should the Dallas Cowboys be America’s Team?” Riddler posed in an Instagram reel. “Their glory days are a distant memory. Maybe it’s time we pick a new team for America, and I think the people of Dallas might be OK with it.”

Riddler points out several reasons why the Cowboys may no longer be deserving of the title. The Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1996 and have only won four playoff games in the last 25 years, he added.

“Don’t you think that a country that loves to think of itself as a winner should give its affection to a team that actually wins things?” Riddler continued.

The Chiefs’ dominance in recent years further strengthens Riddler’s argument.

With three Super Bowl appearances in the last five seasons and a potential three-peat on the horizon, they have firmly cemented themselves as a powerhouse in the league.

Additionally, the Chiefs have gained significant cultural relevance, particularly through Kelce’s connection to Taylor Swift, drawing millions of Swifties into their fanbase.

“That’s surely America’s team,” Riddler added.

However, Riddler also acknowledges the historic ties between Texas and the Chiefs, who actually originated as the Dallas Texans and once shared a stadium with the Cowboys in the old American Football League and boasts that at least Texas, and Dallas, can continue to “claim a slice.”

“Who really is America’s team? Isn’t it time that we picked a historical and relevant team that’s more deserving of the title?”
