The Ellis Island Initiative, a coalition of labor, business, and advocacy groups, is urging New York state to allocate $100 million to help migrants integrate into the workforce amid labor shortages and looming deportation threats under the incoming federal administration.
The proposal includes $50 million for job training resources like English classes and certifications, and another $50 million for support services such as childcare, housing, and transportation. Advocates highlight nearly 500,000 job vacancies across industries like hospitality and construction.
Supporters argue this funding would strengthen the economy, address systemic barriers, and create a more effective pipeline between migrants and employment opportunities.
