COLLEGE SOFTBALL WORLD SERIES: UT-Tyler walks off Augie in extra innings

LONGWOOD, FL (Dakota News Now) – No. 7 seed Augustana fell Sunday afternoon to No. 2 seed UT Tyler by a score of 2-1 in extra innings. The Vikings opened up the scoring but UT Tyler answered back and scored the winning run in extra innings. Augustana will play its next game in a double-elimination tournament on Tuesday.

The Vikings collected six hits, one run and left three runners on base. Grace Glanzer pitched 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on 10 hits. Desi Cuevas hit a home run in the sixth and went 3-3 on the day.

UT Tyler 2, Augustana 1

After a single in the top of the first from Andrea Cain, UT Tyler worked the Vikings to three quick outs. Glanzer saw three batters in the bottom of the first and sat all of them down with flyouts to Liz Dierks.

The Vikings went three up, three down to start the second inning. Glanzer continued to make short work of the opponents with two groundouts and a flyout to Cuevas.

The pitching duel continued into the third inning. Augustana went one-two-three while UT Tyler tallied its first of the game with a single to left field.

Cuevas recorded a double to start the fourth inning as she smashed the ball to deep left-center field. Christin Haygood of UT Tyler answered the double with two strikeouts and a flyout to right field. In the bottom of the fourth, Cuevas made a diving play in four territory to record the first out. The Patriots hit back-to-back singles but Glanzer locked in and left the runners on base going into the fifth.

Ashton Dorman opened up the fifth with a single to right-center field. Hailey Houston entered the game as a pinch runner and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Bellis. Two more Vikings went down with a groundout and lineout to finish the top of the fifth. UTT opened the fifth with a single to left field but Glanzer locked down the next three batters.

The first run of the game came in the top of the sixth as Cuevas powered the ball deep into center field and over the fence, Augustana led 1-0. UT Tyler answered back in the bottom of the sixth off with a single to deep right-center field to plate its first run.

Both teams battled in the seventh but extra innings were needed. Two Vikings went down to start the eighth but Cain got the Vikings on the bags with a single to right field. Cuevas stepped into the plate next and shot a ball toward the second basemen but hit Cain while she was running, causing an out.

The Patriots hit a single through the right side to start things out. After a quick flyout to Dierks, UT Tyler reached base on a fielding error. With runners on first and second, UTT hit a single through the left side and plated the winning run.

Up Next

Augustana will play its next game on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. (CST) and will face the loser of Western Washington/Wilmington (DE). If the Vikings win, they will play again on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. (CST) and face the loser coming out of the winners’ bracket.
