Colorado Thanksgiving travel forecast to be heavily impacted by snow into Wednesday

If you’re heading to Colorado’s mountains for Thanksgiving, you’d best not procrastinate as light overnight snow Monday is expected to pick up steadily throughout Tuesday with road conditions to quickly deteriorate during the day.

The snowstorm bearing down on Colorado has already produced a winter storm warning and avalanche warning into Wednesday for much of the mountains, where 10 to 22 inches of snow and high winds are expected to make travel treacherous to impossible.

The foothills are under a winter storm advisory into Wednesday, with 4 to 10 inches of snow expected, according to the National Weather Service early Tuesday morning.

Here is the latest update on timing of the storm as well as expected snowfall totals, according to the National Weather Service:

Timing of the storm and impacts to travel

  • Mountains: 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, snow rates of a half inch to 1 inch per hour. 6 p.m. to midnight Tuesday, up to 1 to 2 inches per hour. Midnight to noon Wednesday, a half inch to 1 inch per hour, then light snow until 6 p.m. Interstate 70 and most major highways in the mountains west of Denver are expected to be heavily impacted starting Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday.
  • Foothills: Noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, rain/snow mix, turning to light snow 6 p.m. to midnight. Moderate snow of a half inch to 1 inch per hour midnight to noon Wednesday, then light snow until 6 p.m. Travel impacts less severe than mountains but roads will still be impacted into Wednesday.
  • Fort Collins/Greeley/Denver: 6 p.m. to midnight Tuesday, rain. Midnight to 6 a.m. Wednesday, rain/snow mix. 6 a.m. to noon Wednesday, light snow turning to a rain/snow mix from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Little travel impact expected.

  • Fort Collins and surrounding area: Less than 1 inch
  • Red Feather Lakes: 4-6 inches
  • Estes Park: 3-4 inches
  • Boulder: 2-3 inches
  • Denver: 1-2 inches
  • DIA: 1-2 inches
  • Castle Rock: 4-6 inches
  • Colorado Springs: 3-4 inches
  • Walden: 4-6 inches
  • Steamboat Springs: 12-18 inches
  • Winter Park: 18-24 inches
  • Granby: 8-12 inches
  • Vail: 18-24 inches
  • Breckenridge: 12-18 inches
  • Aspen: 12-18 inches
