Concerned Upstate business owners to hold presser on liquor liability costs

TAYLORS, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Concerned Upstate business owners and elected officials are expected to meet in Taylors to address the rising cost of insurance and the effect it’s having on the state.

This press conference comes as locally owned businesses continue to shut down.

Early this month, the Blind Horse Saloon in Greenville announced it was closing its doors after 29 years.

Another business, Topside Pool Club, announced it was shutting down due to high insurance costs as well.

The South Carolina legislature is set to reconvene on June 5

The South Carolina Bar and Tavern Association said it wants lawmakers to add dealing with alcohol insurance costs to the list of topics set to be addressed.

“Basically, we’re trying to say the DHEC realignment, while you may think it’s important, is not as important as people losing their jobs and businesses shutting down,” said Chris Smith with the SC Bar and Tavern Association. “We’re losing tax revenue throughout the state, tourism money, things of that nature. We believe, in our opinion, that this liquor, or alcohol-liquor liability, is a bigger issue than DHEC.”

The press conference held on Wednesday will take place at Pinky’s Revenge in Taylors starting at 10 a.m.
