The first group of world leaders get their chance to address the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday, with the conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and along the Israel-Lebanon border expected to be among the key topics discussed.
U.S. President Joe Biden is set to speak Tuesday, as his administration navigates both supporting Ukraine in its battle against a Russian invasion and attempts to bring calm to the Middle East.
Also on the schedule is President Andrzej Duda from Poland, whose country has played a key role as a distribution point for aid donations to neighboring Ukraine.
Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is set to address the annual meeting Tuesday amid spiraling violence between Israel and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant group. Qatar, Egypt and the United States have led negotiations to try to achieve a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip that officials say is necessary to bring the situation in the region under control.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II, whose nation has seen the conflict play out just over its border and shot down Iranian drones headed for Israel earlier this year, will be one of the day’s first speakers.
Tuesday’s schedule also includes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Vietnamese President To Lam, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
