MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The Myrtle Beach Classic has thousands of volunteers helping from all across the country, but one couple came a long way from home to be a part of the Grand Strand’s first PGA tournament.

Jean-Ann and Harry Varanick drove 16 hours from Ontario, Canada to volunteer at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

They are the only two volunteers from Canada at the entire tournament and said they couldn’t hop in the car fast enough when they were chosen.

“It was exciting,” Jean-Ann said. “Every time we talk to someone from back home in Canada, they’re envious,” Harry said. “They’re wondering how the heck did you guys do this.”

Each day they get their orders from the volunteer headquarters. Jean-Ann helped check players in, and Harry was sent to man the grounds.

“They came in to register, and I handed them their yard or meters book but many of them took the yard book,” Jean-Ann said.

“I’m in charge of a zone,” Harry said. “I’m there to ensure that the course remains safe while people are playing.”

The couple said they’re thankful for the experience and the chance to watch golf and enjoy the beach.

“It’s just a fun thing to do,” Jean-Ann said.

“Just to get away and put down that computer for a couple of days that’s gonna be a bonus,” Harry said. “We’re here for vacation, and I just want to enjoy what Myrtle Beach and South Carolina have to give us.”

Around 4,000 people signed up to volunteer, but the tournament could only accept around 1,500.
