Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer travels to Detroit Lakes | KROX

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team travels to Detroit Lakes to take on the Lakers at 7:00 tonight.

FIRST HALF
Detroit Lakes started the game by putting pressure on the Crookston defense for the first 10 minutes. Over two minutes into the game, Detroit Lakes had a shot on the run that sailed over the net. Three minutes later, they had a shot that sailed to the right of the net. Eight minutes into the game, Crookston finally got a shot on goal as Jack Everett had a free kick from 25 yards out, and the goalie made the save. 10 minutes into the game, Brandon Colborn had a shot on goal after a nice play and pass from Everett, but the Laker goalie made the save. A couple of minutes later, Detroit Lakes had two shots on goal over a minute span, and Crookston’s Reggie Winjum made a leaping and lunging save to keep the game scoreless.
Just over 15 minutes into the game, Crookston’s Colborn had a breakaway and was slide-tackled from behind and taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Colborn blasted a kick into the net for a 1-0 lead.
58 seconds later, Crookston was on the attack again as the ball was at the top of the box. Carter Fee tried to kick the ball but barely got a piece of it. The miss-kick actually worked out because the ball went to Brandon Colborn, who kicked the ball into the net. The Laker goalie made the save but twisted his ankle and fell down. Crookston’s Jay Reese crashed the net and kicked the ball into the net to give Crookston a 2-0 lead 16:21 into the game.
15 minutes left in the half, Detroit Lakes had another great shot on goal, but Crookston’s Winjum made a diving save to keep the Crookston lead at 2-0.
The rest of the half was even with neither team getting a quality shot on goal and a lot of the final 10 minutes was played at mid-field as Crookston took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
The first 10 minutes were even, with each team having the ball in the other team’s defensive end about 50/50. Crookston finally broke through a little over 12 minutes into the half when Jack Everett found Brandon Colborn, who kicked the ball past the Laker goalie for a goal and a 3-0 lead. Almost halfway through the half, Crookston had a beautiful kick down the field, and Matthew Contreras caught up with the ball and blew by a Laker defender and put a kick on goal, but the Laker goalie was able to make a big save.
Contreras had another chance as he beat a defender, but he was knocked down from behind and had a free kick from about 30 yards out. The Laker goalie made the save to keep the Pirate lead at 3-0.
It looked like Crookston started to wear down Detroit Lakes in the final 15 minutes. Crookston’s Michael Bochow got a pass to Mathew Contreras who kicked the ball into the corner of the net for a 4-0 lead.
Less than 30 seconds later, Crookston’s Brandon Colborn had a beautiful cross pass to Contreras, who kicked the ball into the net for a 5-0 Pirate lead with less than 10 minutes remaining, and things were looking good for the visitors.
Give credit to Detroit Lakes, as they continued to battle back and scored two goals in 63 seconds to get within a 5-2 deficit with less than four minutes remaining. Detroit Lakes continued to pepper the Pirate goal with shots, but Winjum was able to make the saves the rest of the way and Crookston won 5-2.
