CrossFit legend takes on her first ever Hyrox – and comes third
Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr – CrossFit Games champion no less than seven times – competed in her first Hyrox over the weekend, in Melbourne. Pairing up with fellow Australian and CrossFit Games Team champ, James Newbury, the duo entered in the mixed doubles division.
Crossing the finish line in an impressive 55:48, they took silver in their heat and podiumed at third place in the competitive hybrid fitness race.
The pair performed consistently well, with Tia sharing on her Instagram stories that they were second on the leaderboard for station number four, the burpee broad jump.
Hyrox Australia and New Zealand also shared footage of her throughout the race. She sweated it out during the sled pull:
Toomey-Orr then tested her grip strength during the farmers carries:
She showed off her upper-body power and endurance during the Ski Erg:
And she repped out her wall balls at the last station:
The pair’s win is in the top 50 of all time for mixed doubles, with the fastest time in Hyrox history set at 50:58 by Alexander Roncevic and Alice Shürer in April this year.
With more CrossFit victories under her belt than any other athlete in the history of the sport, Toomey-Orr’s Hyrox participation has been anticipated since she won strength competition Rogue Invitational in Aberdeen in November. In her thank-you Instagram post, the mother and author hinted at her upcoming Hyrox appearance: ‘Now off to try some @hyroxworld‘.
Fellow athletes Jay Crouch and Maddie Sturt from PRVN Fitness – the online training platform co-founded by Toomey-Orr and husband, Shane – also took part, while 8x CrossFit Games athlete Hayley Adams paired up with Andy Mathers, crossing the finish line in 1:00:54.
