CSRA’s cicada craze emerges as a new fashion trend
GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – You’ve probably heard the loud humming or seen the cicadas that seem to be everywhere around here.
One mother and one boutique owner in Grovetown are turning the insect into a work of art.
You can hear them before you can see them, but what if you could wear them, too?
“There’s a large, large brood outside right now that have been just consuming our walkways and everything, and I’ve been cleaning them all up,” said Cicada Earrings artist Briana Alley.
Alley says she’s always loved nature and art. So, she decided to take the cicada craze and turn their wings into fashion.
“I find the prettiest wings, the ones that aren’t damaged, and I end up going through a cleaning process drying them. I paint some of them, I do resin on some of them,” she said.
The little creatures are so rampant in the Augusta area, one local boutique decided to make “Cicada Comeback Tour” T-shirts.
“When everyone started talking about the cicadas, we just had a friend. She suggested she’s like why don’t you guys make a T-shirt? And we were like, ‘OK.’ And we were like, ‘You know, what can that hurt?’ So we found a design and we put them on. And I mean within within hours we had people messaging us and ordering T-shirts,” said Make Me Design owner Mandy Picart.
Whether you love them or hate them, they could become the next fashion trend to hit the red carpet.
“Don’t be afraid of them. They’re just like butterflies. Cicadas are kind of neat if you give it a chance,” said Alley.
If you want to add some cicada accessories to your wardrobe, both the shirts and the earrings are less than $30.
You can purchase a shirt here, or by emailing makemedesigncompany@gmail.com and you can get a pair of earrings here.
