Brennen Davis has struggled with injuries over the last few years.
The latest knock to the Cubs’ former top prospect could cause him to miss a chunk of the season — if not all of it.
Davis suffered a fractured back and was placed on the IL with Iowa. Davis was the top-ranked Cubs prospect midyear 2021 and during mid-season 2022, per Marquee Sports Network’s Lance Brozdowski.
Across three levels in 2021, Davis hit .260/.375/.494 with 19 home runs and participated in that year’s Futures Game, where he was named MVP for a 2-home run game.
It was 2022 when the injuries really started to affect him.
Back surgery in June of that year limited him to just 52 games and he posted a .597 OPS with 5 home runs in that time. He returned for the Arizona Fall League later that year, hitting 2 home runs in 5 games and a 1.048 OPS and he was added to the Cubs’ 40-man roster that offseason.
He had another injury-mired campaign in 2023. Davis hit .201 with 5 home runs in 71 games, 62 coming with Triple-A Iowa.
This season, Davis looked to be rediscovering his mojo. In 36 games with Iowa, Davis had a 138 weighted runs created plus, a .933 OPS with 10 home runs and 26 RBI. But he last appeared in a game on June 11 against the Columbus Clippers, where he went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts.
There’s no timetable on a potential return, but it figures to be a lengthy recovery.
