Cultured Couture Fashion Show showcases Native apparel

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – The community had the opportunity to learn about native art and culture this weekend thanks to the Sacred Pipe Resource Center. The three designers, including Bonnie Good Bird, featured at the show customize and create a variety of different products, such as bags, skirts and belts.

“I usually sew for our people, our tribe. I think this is my second or third time coming off the reservation… to do a craft,” said Good Bird. While some of these creations are up for sale or made as custom orders, some of these designers like Shoshana Saddler use their years’ worth of experience and skills to create clothing for their friends and loved ones.

“I’ve been sewing since I was in high school, I’ve been beading probably since I was like eight or nine,” said Saddler. Native people of all ages were also able to register to model the different clothing items down a runway and show off their culture.

“Our culture was taken away from us, and it’s a really important thing to all of us here that came, and a really important thing to me so I decided to model,” said model Amara Morin. This was the first time some of these people had ever modeled before. They say while they felt nervous, they walked off the stage with a feeling of accomplishment.

“Proud of myself and thankful to my mom, and proud of her,” said Chloe Fry, model at the show. Good Bird says this won’t be the last fashion show she participates in.
