Daniil Medvedev upstaged World number one Jannik Sinner to enter his second-successive semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships.
Fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev outclassed World number one Jannik Sinner in five sets to enter his second-successive semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday. Making a huge statement in the Grand Slam event, the Russian upstaged the top seed 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals. Medvedev avenged his Australian Open final loss with a hard-fought win on a covered Centre Court.
The Italian had forced Medvedev to squander his two-set lead in this year’s Australian Open final. Saving a set point, Sinner won the opening set in a tight tiebreak. Losing the second set to the Russian, the top seed needed treatment off the court early in the third after apparently feeling ill. Sinner bounced back after losing the third-set tiebreak as the Italian managed to take the Russian into a deciding fifth set.
However, Sinner failed to stop Medvedev, who got an early break against the World No.1 in the quarter-finals. The Russian then wrapped up a famous win in four hours to enter the last four of the Grand Slam event. The former US Open winner ended a five-match losing streak against Sinner to enter his ninth Grand Slam semi-final. Medvedev will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American Tommy Paul in the semi-finals.
‘Knew if I wanted to beat Jannik…’
“I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik, it needs to be a tough match. He’s not a guy you can beat easy anymore. I felt at one moment he was not feeling that good but he started feeling better so I’m happy I managed to still stay at a high level. It’s always tricky because you want to play more points to make him suffer a little bit more but in a good way,” Medvedev said after the match.
