Day 1 of World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest kicks off
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest begins Wednesday.
Day 1 will be headlined by Barbecue Sauce Wrestling as gates open at 5 p.m. and the Lighting of the Grill ceremony will be at 5;30 p.m.
The contest will go from Wednesday, June 15 to Sunday, June 18.
Many call this the ‘Super Bowl of Swine’ as teams from more than 22 states and five countries are coming to participate.
It is widely recognized as the Most Prestigious Barbecue Contest as teams fight for bragging rights.
While usually held at Tom Lee Park, organizers moved the festival to Liberty Park with the expectation to draw thousands of people.
Visitors can eat barbecue at the Kingsford Tour of Champions, BBQ Alley with Big Green Egg & Friends, and four well-known barbecue restaurants.
