Filipinos worldwide consider the parol — a traditional ornamental lantern — as a cherished and enlightening Christmas symbol. This year’s Big Parol (20” above category) winners were: Entry #33 Peace of the world, Renee Meneses; #41 Poison Ivy, Jason Momon & Josiah Iosefa; and #46 Lucia, Joselin Villanueva & Jules Valeria. (Courtesy of Nestor Aliga) On Dec. 14 after the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony honoring the — 1000 buried at the Mare Island U.S. Veterans Affairs Cemetery, members of the Vallejo Navy League also placed ‘Wreaths Around Vallejo’ at local cemeteries and memorials including the War Memorial, Police & Fire Memorial, Battle Torpedo (behind/at City Hall), and the Port Chicago Memorial (on Ryder Street). From left are: new Council Member Brando Cruz (U.S. Air Force Veteran, retired BART Police Sergeant, past Planning Commissioner), new Council Member Melissa Lamattina (Napa County In-Home Supportive Services Social Worker, 48 year resident, community activist), new Mayor Pierre Washington (U.S. Navy Veteran, retired Police Detective and Security Director, past Council Member), and continuing Council Members David Oro and Vice Mayor Mark Joseph. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Carl H. Kreh Post 1123 and The American Legion (TAL) Mare Island Navy Yard Post 550 sponsored the party.
