Despite Major Improvements, Z Flip 6 And Z Fold 6 Domestic Pre-Sales Fall Short By 110,000 Units Compared To Predecessors

While Samsung’s Unpacked Event 2024 unveiled a plethora of devices, the spotlight remained on the next-generation foldable series. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 were launched with upgraded features, some significant design changes, and the incorporation of AI capabilities. Compared to its predecessor, the foldable had a hefty price tag attached to it, which was attributed to the inclusion of Galaxy AI. While the expectations with the Z6 have been great, a recent Korean report reveals the domestic pre-sales, and we were not prepared for this.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 Korean pre-sales were significantly less than its predecessor, contrary to expectations

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 were launched at the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 with a foldable form factor and the inclusion of Galaxy AI. Before the release, the tech community had created quite the buzz about the potential design upgrades and hardware changes making their way to the series. While the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 recorded the highest pre-sales, the expectations for the next generation were to surpass the record. However, a recent report highlighted the pre-sales recorded for the Z6 series in South Korea, which is not what we expected.

According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung Electronics announced today the domestic pre-sales for the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 that extended from July 12th to July 18th, and the company was able to pre-sell 910,000 units. If you compare the pre-sales figures with those of the previous generation, the Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 broke records for the highest pre-sales by selling over 1.02 million units. This denotes a drop of 110,000 units this year for the new foldable compared to the previous year.

While the number of units sold in the pre-sale period has dropped significantly from last year, the sales figures were still decent on account of the recent global economic condition. Since the component prices are on the rise, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 ended up being more expensive than the previous series, but the Galaxy AI inclusion could also be a reason for the increased prices. We assume the high-cost trend also affected the pre-sales of the foldable.

The report further highlights that Samsung has been receiving positive product reviews from stores globally, which could point to the devices being well-received by users and the pre-sale figure not truly representing the expected sales. There is a high chance that sales will see an upward trend when the foldables are officially sold.

Another important aspect to note is that the pre-sale ratio for the Z Fold 6 increased by 10 percent compared to the Fold 5. The pre-order ratio for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 is 40:60, respectively. Apart from the drop in the pre-sale units for the new series, the Silver Shadow seems to be the color of the year for the foldable, grabbing maximum sales for both the Fold and Flip models.
