In 2024, Bungie delivered the highly anticipated expansion, The Final Shape, marking the dramatic conclusion to Destiny 2’s long-running Light and Darkness saga. While this epic chapter brought closure to years of storytelling, Bungie had already made it clear that this was far from the end for Destiny 2.

Now, in 2025, Bungie is moving to a new content model for Destiny 2, one that replaces yearly expansions with two medium-sized expansions and introduces new seasonal structures, innovative gameplay systems, and long-awaited quality-of-life improvements.

This new structure begins with the expansion codenamed Apollo which will feature a new “Metroidvania-inspired destination” and kick off the next multi-year saga.

Destiny 2’s 2025 roadmap includes Episodes, expansions, and a slew of new features. Here are the major updates broken down:

Episode Revenant Act 3 (January 2025)

• Start Date: Tuesday, January 7, 2025
• End Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2025
• Kell’s Fall Exotic mission: Tuesday, January 7, 2025
• New balance update: Tuesday, January 14, 2025
• Iron Banner: Tuesday, January 14, 2025
• Trials of Osiris (Adept Prophet): Friday, January 31, 2025

Episode Heresy (February – May 2025)

• Start Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2025
• New Dungeon Release: Friday, February 7, 2025
• Episode Details:
  • The long-anticipated return of the Dreadnaught.
  • Bungie says Heresy will “close the door on the Light and Darkness Saga and act as a prologue to Codename Apollo.”
  • A dark, bone-themed aesthetic for new seasonal weapons.
  • Two new armor sets: One themed after Eris Morn and the other is the Hive Ship Navigator armor.
  • Three acts, each bringing new quests, weapons, and activities, including a new exotic mission and weapon.

Expansion: Codename Apollo (Summar 2025)

• Start Date: June 2025
• End Date: November 2025
• Expansion Details:
  • Non-linear story inspired by “the Dreaming City or Metroidvanias” and “roguelikes or survival shooters” design principles.
  • A new Metroidvania-inspired destination.
  • A brand-new raid will be released alongside this expansion.
  • New exotic weapons and armor.
• Major Update: Codename Arsenal (Summer 2025)
  • This update will expand the new Apollo raid “adding new challenges, twists, and rewards.”
  • New and reprised activities. New events, gear, and Artifact mods.
  • A new Rewards Pass with new exotic weapons and ornaments, Legendary weapons and ornaments, gear upgrade resources, and more.
• Major Update: Codename Surge (Fall 2025)
  • New and reprised activities. New events, gear, and Artifact mods.

Expansion: Behemoth (Winter 2025)

• Start Date: December 2025
• End Date: May 2026
• This expansion will add a brand-new dungeon to the game, with its rewards “expanded to include full weapon and armor sets, on par with raids,” according to Bungie.

• Major Update (Winter 2025)

2025 will be a crucial year for Destiny 2’s future. Currently, the game is experiencing its lowest population in history, coupled with increasing complaints from fans about persistent bugs, glitches, and a repetitive grind.

Bungie has also acknowledged the need to “re-earn” players’ trust following the backlash over this year’s Dawning event, which launched riddled with technical issues. With the 2025 roadmap offering significant changes and bold promises, it’ll be interesting to see if—and how—Bungie manages to stage a comeback.
