Disc golf tournament boosts fitness and funds for Camp Lovejoy

A disc golf tournament held this weekend help people get in shape and raise money for kids, hoping they’ll do the same. The disc golf tournament raised money for the Boys and Girls Club of Schenectady.

A toss and a nice little trek through Schenectady’s Central Park brought a decent-sized group of players to the ElectriCity Disc Dash Tournament this weekend, not only working on their disc golf skills, but also raising money for Camp Lovejoy in Altamont. It’s a camp of roughly 250 children hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Schenectady.

“We really appreciate everything that people can do that helps makes this experience possible because it really does change lives,” said Felix Perez from the Boys and Girls Club of Schenectady.

“They serve a lot of the underprivileged children within Schenectady, and one of the great things they do is they get the kids out of the city in the summer and out to Camp Lovejoy,” said Ryan Kelton, of the Kelton Financial Group, who participated in Saturday’s tournament.

The disc golf tournament set an example for the kids too, showing adults getting active and focusing not only on physical fitness, but all aspects of wellness.

“It’s more than just physical health. It’s our emotional health. It’s our mental health and making sure we’re doing that for our leaders for all of our people so they can show up and be the best,” said consultant Joelle Monaco.

Several Capital Region businesses showed up to participate not only for the cause, but as a corporate wellness initiative.

“Wellness programs really are about just developing strong people, and as part of a company’s success, involving them in community investment is good business,” said MJK Strategies President Margo Rudzinski.

And who wouldn’t want to invest in an environment like this?

CBS 6 was a sponsor of the event. CBS 6’s Lara Bryn created a meditation and yoga warmup video for those participating.

Last week, CBS 6’s Lara Bryn sat down with Perez and Monaco to discuss what people could expect from the weekend’s disc golf tournament.
