SAN ANTONIO (November 22, 2024) – During the November 21 Special Session, San Antonio’s City Council received a briefing on a proposed plan to create a Sports and Entertainment District near Hemisfair Park that would include the possibility of a downtown arena for the Spurs. District 10 Councilmember Marc Whyte highlighted the potential for significant growth this initiative could bring to San Antonio, emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility.
“Thank you to our City staff for their tireless efforts on this important project,” said Councilmember Whyte. “This could be a game-changing moment for San Antonio. This proposed development has the potential to unlock new economic possibilities for residents across all parts of the city. Our community is defined by its rich heritage and vibrant spirit—qualities embodied by the San Antonio Spurs, our hometown team that symbolize what makes our city so special.”
While expressing strong support for the initiative, Councilmember Whyte stressed the importance of safeguarding taxpayers. “It’s essential that this project not be funded on the backs of our hardworking residents. For this development to succeed, it must be approached responsibly and thoughtfully. We look forward to continued discussions on these plans, and hope this vision for San Antonio’s future can become a reality that will make all San Antonians proud.”
