Do not travel through snow storm, VDOT warns
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Motorists should not travel in parts of Virginia through Monday, January 6, the state’s Transportation Department warned as a winter storm approached on Sunday afternoon.
In a news release, the Virginia Department of Transportation recommended against travel across the state, citing expected snow, sleet and days of freezing temperatures. Snow accumulation could be particularly dangerous in local transportation hubs in Northern Virginia, Winchester, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg and some parts of Central Virginia.
“The intensity of the storm will produce conditions that will require multi-day operations to make roadways passable,” according to the VDOT news release. “Having fewer cars on the road will help to keep everyone safe and allow crews to perform their jobs in a safer and more effective manner.”
If travel is necessary, VDOT recommended checking road conditions through 511.vdot.virginia.gov, the 511 mobile app, or by call 511.
More travel safety information is available at VDOT’s weather page.
