Nearly 4.6 million people work in New Jersey in thousands of different types of jobs. 

But nearly 840,000 positions make up the top 10 most common roles, according to data from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.  

Laborers and freight stock and material movers — those who move goods from storage areas like warehouses and loading docks to delivery trucks — make up the largest category of job in New Jersey with more than 108,000 positions in the state.

They are followed by home health and personal care aides, with nearly 101,000 positions, and retail salespersons, at 99,230.

Cashiers is the next largest category, followed by registered nurses, stockers and order fillers, fast food and counter workers, general office clerks, hand packers and packagers, and customer services representatives.

Health care a growing field in NJ

Health care  — particularly nursing — has been one of the few areas that’s seen growth in recent years, especially amid inflation. 

That comes as the baby boomer population ages out and becomes one of the health care and nursing sector’s biggest group of consumers, said James Hughes, an economist and professor of urban planning at Rutgers University.

Personal care aides are often hired to care for people in hospice care, according to BLS.

Advanced degrees are not required for most home health aides, but those employed by home health or hospice agencies may need to complete formal training or pass a standardized test.

Retail salespeople and fast food counter workers do not require a formal education, the BLS reported.
