The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series in 2024, but their team could look very different come Opening Day. One of their key players could end up signing with the New York Yankees.
With Walker Buehler’s resurgent postseason, he could end up finding a new home. The New York Yankees got a first-hand look at the two-time All-Star. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi noted that there is “mutual interest” between the two parties.
“What an amazing story it would be if Buehler winds up pitching in 2025 where he threw this final pitch of the World Series in 2024,” said Morosi. “I have been told there is at least some mutual interest between Walker Buehler and the New York Yankees. While that would be an amazing storyline, certainly not unprecedented that you would see someone join a team that they vanquished in the World Series the previous year.”
Buehler had the worst regular season of his career in 2024. He had a 5.38 ERA in 16 starts. His first postseason outing was not much better. However, his next two starts were phenomenal. He threw a combined nine shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. He then proceeded to get the title-clinching save on one day of rest.
The Yankees have a need in their rotation and Buehler would be a cheap option. At his peak, Buehler was getting Cy Young Award votes. The Dodgers star was a big part of the team’s World Series run, but his abysmal regular season may be too much for the team to overlook.
Meanwhile, the Yankees saw Buehler end their season. Adding Buehler would not be the first time a starter joined the team they beat in the World Series, as Morosi noted. Just last offseason, Jordan Montgomery joined the Arizona Diamondbacks after winning the World Series with the Texas Rangers.
