DOH confirms another travel-related dengue case in Hawaii, bringing total to 14

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state Department of Health on Wednesday confirmed another travel-related dengue case in Hawaii.

This time, the case was on Maui.

This brings the total number of cases in the state this year to 14 and four on Maui. There have also been nine on Oahu and one on Kauai.

State officials said the affected traveler had visited a country where dengue is common.

Dengue virus is spread from infected person to mosquito to person. While Hawaii is home to the type of mosquitoes that can carry dengue, the disease is not established here, and recent cases have only been found among travelers.

Symptoms of dengue range from mild to severe and typically include fever, nausea, vomiting, rash and body aches.
