Donald Glover calls out BET for his being ‘neck and neck’ with Sam Smith
Donald Glover has won a number of industry awards across various media, but he’s still waiting for some more love from the BET Awards.
While presenting Album of the Year, which eventually went to Killer Mike for his acclaimed Michael, Glover riffed about his awards tally compared to Will Smith and Sam Smith.
“This isn’t personal, but I just feel like I should have more BET Awards,” Glover said. “I’m serious. It’s the ‘Black Entertainment Television Awards.’ How much more entertaining do I have to do? Because it’s just the math of the fact.”
Glover went on to remark at how it makes “no sense” that he has more Grammys than Will Smith — Glover 5, Smith 2 — but he and Sam Smith have the same amount of BET Awards, with one each.
“It doesn’t really make sense,” Glover continued. “I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which makes no sense, but I have the same amount of BET awards as Sam Smith.”
Glover won his sole BET Award in 2019, Best Music Video for “This Is America,” while Smith won Best New Artist at the ceremony in 2015.
“Does that make sense to you guys? Me and Sam Smith are neck and neck at the Black Entertainment Television [Awards],” Glover wondered aloud. He then declared he would do whatever it takes to get into BET’s good graces, even invoking disgraced actor Jonathan Majors.
“If I have to do Baby Boy or something, just let me know,” he concluded. “I’ll have Jonathan Majors put me in a headlock, shave my head, I’ll do it.”
Despite not getting any trophies that night, Glover was part of the showstopping tribute to Usher, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
