Dothan Leisure Services needs youth sports volunteers

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Dothan Leisure Services needs your help, because a shortage of volunteers could lead to major changes for youth athletics.

DLS is looking for volunteer coaches for the upcoming football, soccer and cheerleading seasons.

With about 700 participants joining the youth athletics programs, DLS tells me volunteers are needed to keeping the programs up and running.

DLS Athletics Manager Jyssica Curenton tells News4 if not enough volunteers sign up, then it could make a big difference in how the programs operate.

“That’s going to be the reduction of teams, that’s gonna be larger numbers on each team or it could be increased costs if it got to the point where we’d have to start paying people to coach,” Curenton explains.

Curenton adds that not enough volunteers could lead to a lower quality experience for children playing sports through these programs.

The requirements for being a volunteering sports coach is be over the age of 18, complete the a coaching safety course and consent to a background check.

For anyone interested in volunteering, beginning July 8 go to Dothan Leisure Services’ website and click on the ‘Volunteering’ tab to fill out a volunteer registration form.
